Making tall buildings out of wood rather than steel and concrete as an eco-friendly construction method is drawing more interest after Skidmore, Owings & Merrill released a report on a system that uses mass timber, or slabs and columns comprised of laminated wood. Building high with wood faces some daunting challenges, however, including cost, lumber supply and fire and building codes limiting the use of wood. "This is the first new way to build in a hundred years," said architect Michael Green, who has designed many timber buildings. "It's going to take a little time to work through the best way of doing it."
