Oracle chief previews high-performance in-memory databases

Oracle is preparing to launch a new database series that drops disk-based hard drives in favor of in-memory processing, the company's founder and CEO said. During a keynote address at Oracle's OpenWorld conference, Larry Ellison said the new database software-hardware combo will provide "ungodly" improvements in performance with speeds 100 times faster than traditional databases.
