U.S. manufacturing growth slows

Manufacturing activity in the U.S. has taken a step back this month, with Markit's Flash U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index easing to 52.8 from 53.1 in August on a scale in which anything above 50 suggests expansion. Looking ahead, a slowdown in domestic and foreign orders indicates that "production growth is likely to weaken in the fourth quarter unless demand picks up again in October," said Chris Williamson, chief economist for Markit.
