Ecuador is prepared to fight Chevron's international arbitration claim

Ecuador's government said it will use "solid legal grounds" to defend itself against an international arbitration claim that Chevron filed in relation to a $27 billion environmental case that the company is facing in the country. The lawsuit, which was brought to court by ethnic groups from the Amazon region, should not be resolved through "an arbitration in which the private parties are not even represented," argued Diego Garcia, the Ecuadorean prosecutor general. Chevron alleges that Ecuador violated its responsibilities under a bilateral investment treaty and other agreements.
