FEMA's new leader brings with him lessons from Florida experience

Craig Fugate brought many of the lessons he learned as director of Florida's Division of Emergency Management to his new job as administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Fugate's efforts in Florida have earned him praise, especially for his leadership during Hurricanes Charley and Ivan. At FEMA, Fugate holds surprise simulations, called "thunderbolts," to make sure rescue workers always are ready to respond to disasters, and campaigns to raise public awareness about the need for disaster preparedness.
