Hospital finds parental care for NICU babies improves outcomes

Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto has fully implemented a family integrated care initiative in its NICU, encouraging parents to be their infant's primary caregivers using nurses as their teachers. A pilot project to test outcomes showed a 25% improvement in weight gain among babies cared for by parents, a doubling of breast-feeding rates, an 11% reduction in infection rates and a 25% drop in treatment errors.
