Human resources personnel generally are not trained to evaluate wellness plans and outcomes and rely on vendor recommendations, so program management should be the responsibility of the finance department, write benefits consultant Tom Emerick and disease management expert Al Lewis. They also suggest focusing wellness programs on what a company can do for employees to encourage wellness, rather than to them -- such as instituting penalties or incentives.
