Statistical model shows promise for determining severity of neonatal outcomes

A prediction model using eight variables determined the severity of outcomes, from mortality to survival without morbidity, of extremely premature babies on the first day of admission to neonatal intensive care units, according to a Canadian study in the journal Pediatrics. Data from the Canadian Neonatal Network database involving 6,106 NICU patients showed that 10% died and 90% survived, including 37% without morbidity, 32% with mild morbidity and 21% with severe morbidity.
