Europe's transaction tax would cover a range of trades

The European Commission is expected to propose a wide-ranging financial-transaction tax. "The commission should make a proposal in the coming weeks," said David Boublil, a commission spokesman. "It should be a tax with a very wide scope to cover a number of financial instruments but also with a low rate." The financial industry continues to voice concerns about such a tax.
