Blackwelder: Primary care must defend its scope of practice

It is important for primary care physicians to defend their scope of practice and establish the difference between primary care services, which may be provided by a number of specialties, and comprehensive primary care, AAFP President-elect Reid Blackwelder, M.D., said during the 2013 Town Hall meeting at the Academy's Congress of Delegates. Alternate delegate Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, M.D., a state senator from Oregon, said family physicians should focus on what is best for patients rather than on what nurse practitioners should or should not do.
