IOSCO seeks tougher criminal enforcement for market abuse

The International Organization of Securities Commissions wants tougher penalties for wrongdoers in the financial industry and is developing a guideline for punishing different offenses. "We have simply had far too many examples over the last 10 years of totally unacceptable behavior in financial markets," Secretary General David Wright said. "The potential illicit financial gains for them far outweighed the risks and costs of getting caught. This equation must be reversed."
