New film honors old ad sweepstakes

The upcoming DreamWorks picture, "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio," based on the Simon & Schuster memoir of the same name, tells the true story of a woman who kept her family together in the 1950s with money earned from sweepstakes and slogan-writing contests. It's the story of Evelyn Ryan, a housewife who won contests sponsored by Dr Pepper, Alcoa, Jell-O and other marketers.
