FDA asks Congress for more food-safety powers

Assistant FDA commissioner David Acheson is seeking additional powers from a House subcommittee for a new proposal on food safety. If enacted, the new three-piece plan, which includes a proactive approach to contamination prevention, a risk-based inspection system and a faster response procedure, would aim to improve the agency's management of food-safety matters.
