Fourth-grade NAEP math scores reach 17-year high

While 39% of fourth-graders reached proficient levels on the National Assessment of Educational Progress math test, up from 13% in 1990, reading gains have been more modest, up to 33% from 29% in 1992. Sobering achievement gaps remained, with black fourth-graders continuing to score lower than their white classmates.
