Conflict divided a secret committee to prevent euro's destruction

Leaders of the eurozone's major economies formed a secret committee to prevent a breakup of the currency union two months after Lehman Bros. collapsed in 2008, according to The Wall Street Journal. Deep differences of opinion within the group brought the euro close to collapse. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde reportedly told associates who worked with her on the committee that the eurozone was on the verge of being torn apart.
