Prussian military officer Friedrich von Steuben helped organize America's Continental Army during the Revolutionary War using methods that modern-day plant managers should find familiar, writes Tom Moriarty, the president of Alidade MER. Von Steuben altered camp layouts to make them more functional, identified root causes of failure for American troops and increased soldiers' proficiency with military tools. "This is much like today's plants, in which the leadership and workforce are intelligent and experienced but lack the time or support needed to be more effective," writes Moriarty.
