Mixed economic picture for the biotech industry

Overall, biotech companies spent more on research and development in 2011 than in 2010, and average revenue for the industry rose. Firms with revenues surpassing $50 million reported a 33% increase in revenue, but smaller biotechs reported a 12% decline, according to consulting firm BDO. Large biotechs tended to raise equity financing, while smaller firms relied on capital markets.
