Mont. cow tests positive for brucellosis

09/26/2013 | Billings Gazette (Mont.)

The National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, confirmed brucellosis infection in a vaccinated female cow from a farm in the southwest portion of Montana where wildlife are known to carry the zoonotic bacteria. This designated surveillance area has seen the pathogen in only eight of 65,000 animals since surveillance began in 2009. "Fact is, we're finding it, we're finding it early, and we're not letting infected animals make it to market," said state veterinarian Marty Zaluski. "We've got a good program that works well for our producers and keeps infected animals from entering interstate commerce."
