New wave of biotech crop seeds poised to reach the market

Biotech scientists are producing new types of sugar beets, soybeans and corn as functional foods that aim to be more convenient, healthy and enjoyable for consumers. The biotech seeds poised to hit the market include beets that produce an indigestible type of sugar that helps in weight management, oilseed crops with more of the beneficial fatty acids, soybeans with oil that does not need hydrogenation -- eliminating a process that produces harmful trans-fatty acids -- and corn with higher levels of unsaturated fat.
