Maine's mandated consolidations may increase costs for some

Some Maine school districts may find it cheaper to pay the financial penalties to defy the state's consolidation law than merge as required, the state's education commissioner told legislators. About 80% of Maine's 290 districts have presented merger plans, but at least 15 districts will see increased costs if they merge, one school board member said.
