Hawaii furlough days not to conflict with professional development

The Hawaii teachers union has agreed to 17 furlough days that equal nearly 8% of pay, but it was able to ensure the furloughs did not conflict with professional-development days. "We demand a lot from our educators and put a lot of pressure on them to raise student achievement, raise test scores. ... Our educators need that time to get training, do planning and identify the needs of their students," said Garrett Toguchi, chairman of the state Board of Education.
