DOD to weigh in on small-satellite option

A plan to build smaller, cheaper satellites for weather forecasting will get a Pentagon review in coming months, possibly setting the stage for government payloads on commercial satellites, as well. The Pentagon is considering the new approach following the cancellation of a large satellite program that was to be built by Northrop Grumman. "There are many of us who believe that we will save money when we go to a more resilient architecture because we can use smaller satellites," said Douglas Loverro, deputy assistant defense secretary for space policy.
