Mass. town hires lawyer for casino community status

Selectmen in Lancaster, Mass., have retained an attorney to help the town gain "surrounding community" status for a proposed slots parlor in nearby Leominster. Orlando Pacheco, the town administrator, said the designation would help Lancaster gain access to mitigation funds for traffic and other issues. Voters in Leominster approved the project this week, but the slots casino still awaits approval by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
