Onion researcher to test contaminated water's effects

Oregon State University Assistant Professor Joy Waite-Cusic has received a $68,000 grant to study the effects of contaminated irrigation water on onions. It's a hot issue as farmers face strict new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration regarding microbes in water used for crop irrigation. Onion growers may be able to win a waiver from the new requirements if experiments like this one show the curing process kills off Salmonella and E. coli.
