Study suggests cause of mental impairment linked to ventilation

Animal research from Spain links mental impairment from being on a mechanical ventilator to programmed cell death in the brain's hippocampus. The study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine suggested the findings could apply to ICU patients and lead to new uses of existing drugs or new medications that stop the adverse effects ventilation can cause in the brain.
