Biodefense bill passes House, moves to Senate

The House on Wednesday passed the Biodefense and Pandemic Vaccine and Drug Development Act of 2006, which would create a group responsible for developing techniques to deal with pandemic viruses and biological attacks within the Department of Health and Human Services. It also would create a board of federal agency members, along with representatives from the medical device, biotech and pharmaceutical industries. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt said he will work with Congress to resolve any remaining issues, noting that the bill will streamline and make transparent biodefense activities.
