New text alert system kept students safe in crisis

St. John's University's new emergency text-messaging system -- implemented in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings -- was so new that it hadn't even been tested. But when a masked gunman walked onto the campus in Queens, N.Y., the system alerted the 2,100 subscribers within minutes and helped administrators safely disperse some 10,000 students.
