Senate passes hate crimes bill; ENDA transgender provisions weakened in House

There was action on two measures important to the LGBT community in Congress on Thursday. The Senate passed a bill adding sexual orientation and transgender identity to the list of groups covered under federal hate crimes law. In the House of Representatives, Democratic leaders decided to remove protections for transgender people in the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act in order to improve the bill's chance of passing the full House.
