Tougher EPA standards prompt changes in small-engine industry

Much like larger-vehicle makers, small-engine manufacturers, including Briggs & Stratton Corp., Kohler Co. and John Deere, are evolving their production to meet tougher environmental requirements. Ariens Corp., for example, currently is manufacturing snow-throwers and other machines that have engines that are not required to meet 2008 regulations. That situation could change, however, resulting in redesigns to include catalytic converters, which creates other issues.
