Groundbreaking Chinese immersion school has record of success

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the nation's first Chinese immersion program at a public school. Instruction starts in Cantonese at West Portal Elementary School in San Francisco and builds in English until children are grade-level proficient in both languages. Signs of the school's success: 446 families vied for 34 kindergarten openings, and the school's achievement scores ranked among California's highest.
