Work begins on $347 million tunnel underneath San Francisco Bay

Crews have begun construction of a $347 million water tunnel beneath San Francisco Bay. The pipeline will deliver water to South Bay residents and is designed to be earthquake-proof, with 3-foot-thick watertight walls and a 12-foot-thick concrete floor slab. The tunnel is being built at depths of up to 100 feet.
