Can Yahoo! catch up in search?

An article in the Economist traces Yahoo!'s current No. 2 position in the search category to a decision made in the late 1990s to deemphasize search in favor of serving as a portal to content. Yahoo! chairman and CEO Terry Semel counters that Yahoo! has suffered less from Google's primacy in search than have other rivals, and that Yahoo!'s upcoming release of its automated ad-buying platform, dubbed Panama, will do much to improve Yahoo!'s fortunes.
