Virginia group lobbies for more focus on social studies

With research showing that elementary schools under pressure to raise reading and math scores have cut class time for social studies, a Virginia consortium of social studies educators is pushing to make social studies test scores a factor in federal school ratings. The group's president says society is neglecting to teach students the skills they need to appreciate the impact of history and their social environment on their lives.
