California grapples with future of dams

California may revive a heated debate over state dams that played out 30 years ago when a river guide chained himself to a rock on the north bank of the Stanislaus River to protest dam construction. While the New Melones Dam was eventually constructed, the dam ended up delivering water to Stockton rather than replenishing local water supplies. California lawmakers are searching for alternatives to dams, even as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pushes new dams and reservoirs to ease the state's water crisis.
