Lockheed Martin pushes ahead with Orion amid uncertainty

Lockheed Martin is making preparations at its Orion production facility in Florida to send the Orion space capsule on its first test flight in 2013, even though its funding and mission are not confirmed. A working version of the space capsule could be complete by the end of 2012, and the company is even working on a scenario for flying the spacecraft to an asteroid. Orion appeared doomed under President Barack Obama's 2011 budget proposal, but compromises under way in Congress call for the project to be revived.
