Merger activity may put more heat on American

Analysts say the recent wave of mergers and acquisitions in the airline industry could pressure American Airlines and others to make similar deals in order to remain competitive in the business-travel market, where extensive route networks are crucial. Experts have said that US Airways, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines would all make a logical partner for American. Meanwhile, American insists that it can use alliances to achieve the benefits of a merger, and insiders say there have already been talks aimed at luring US Airways into the Oneworld alliance.
