Pentagon: Efforts are under way to curtail overspending

Pentagon spending has swelled to cumbersome proportions and the department has become over-reliant on contractors, top Defense Department officials told Congress this week. Task forces are working to target unnecessary excess and find $100 billion in cuts over the next five years, according to Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III.
