High levels of folate supplements associated with infant eczema

High doses of folate supplements during pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of eczema for infants, according to an Australian study. However, no correlation was found between eczema and overall levels of folate in maternal and cord blood. "While folate taken as a supplement in higher doses during the third trimester was associated with eczema, there was no effect on other allergic outcomes including sensitization," researchers wrote in the journal Allergy. The study looked at data on 628 pregnant women in their last trimester and 484 1-year-olds.
