ESMA seeks to levy fee on non-EU clearinghouses

The European Securities and Markets Authority has sent a letter to the European Parliament asking whether it can charge clearinghouses outside the EU for operating within the bloc. ESMA Chairman Steven Maijoor wrote that each foreign clearinghouse that seeks to do business in the EU must be thoroughly vetted, a task "much more burdensome than originally expected."
