GAO tells IRS to step up pre-filing procedures for the Compliance Assurance Process

The Internal Revenue Service needs to sharpen its pre-filing procedures for the Compliance Assurance Process, according to a Government Accountability Office report. The IRS doesn't assess program outcomes adequately to make sure they will provide more certainty around tax liabilities, the GAO found. The CAP program gives large corporate taxpayers and the IRS a chance to work through possible differences before a tax return is filed.
