Wellness programs grow as studies examine cost effectiveness

Safeway’s approach to employee wellness, which includes measures of weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and tobacco use, has been used as an amendment in the Affordable Care Act, and workplace wellness programs generally are popular and growing. A 2010 analysis of 36 past studies found substantial savings from such programs: $6 saved for every $1 spent. Other studies have produced mixed results.
