What "Breaking Bad" can teach the cable biz

AMC's "Breaking Bad," which wrapped its five-season run on Sunday night, set a new standard in its ability to challenge the audience while still being entertaining, writes Patrick Maines, president of The Media Institute. The series "was marked by ambiguity, complexity, surprise and sophistication," he writes. According to Variety's AJ Marechal, rival networks can learn a few lessons from the success of "Breaking Bad," including being patient, using streaming to your advantage and looking beyond the pilot to see a show's long-term potential.
