What students' instrument choices say about their personalities

Members of an Iowa middle school's 95-person sixth-grade band often choose the musical instruments they play based on their personalities, said band director Bob Gibson. While the trombone and the flute are the more popular instruments this year, one student said she chose the euphonium because she will stand out in the band when she gets a solo. "Some students prefer to be part of a crowd while others want to stand alone," Gibson said.
