Mark Leno, the openly gay California Assemblyman who championed a bill to legalize marriage for gays and lesbians, slammed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of the measure yesterday. "He cannot claim to support fair and equal legal protection for same-sex couples and veto the very bill that would have provided it to them," Leno said. Schwarzenegger said the bill would controvert the will of state voters who, five years earlier, passed Proposition 22 defining marriage as a heterosexual institution, a measure now being challenged in state courts.
