The ability to form associations between seemingly unrelated problems and solutions is the most important innovation tool, says Brigham Young University professor Jeff Dyer, who co-authored a six-year study of 3,000 innovative business leaders. The ability to question conventional wisdom can improve the effectiveness of other innovation skills, Dyer notes, but it doesn't produce innovative thought all by itself.
