Eco-friendly lawn care starts with minimal applications of chemical fertilizers such as phosphorous, which should not be used on established lawns. Les Wilshusen, general manager of Mike's Lawn Service in Iowa, also said leaving grass clippings on the lawn prevents fertilizer runoff. "The worst runoff pollution happens when people mow and blow their grass clippings into driveways, streets or right into ponds," Wilshusen said.
