Basalt fibers rock in first real-world test

Rock-fiber rebar is getting its first real-world test, helping to reinforce the concrete roadway on a bridge in Northern Ireland. The basalt rock fibers, which have twice the tensile strength of steel, have passed their initial inspections with flying colors, withstanding simulated wheel loads of 44 tons and showing less than half of the deflection displayed by conventional materials.
