Study: Media coverage of animal-welfare issues spurs slowdown in meat consumption

Consumers exposed to news stories about animal-welfare issues in the pork and poultry industries tend to cut back their spending on those items and instead spend more of their food budget on nonmeat items, according to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural Economics. The study found that increased coverage of the issues between 1999 and 2008 led shoppers to buy less pork and chicken, but did not appear to impact beef sales.
