CDC: Nearly 20% of workers smoke

The smoking rate for all workers in the U.S. is 19.3%, says CDC senior scientific adviser Ann Malarcher, the co-author of a report on workplace smoking in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The report, based on the National Health Interview Survey for 2004-2010, found that smoking rates went from less than 9% among workers in education to more than 31% among construction workers. Better strategies are needed to reach young men who perform physical labor, said Dr. Norman Edelman of the American Lung Association
