Fewer jobless claims and higher GDP brighten U.S. prospects

Two government reports offered some relief from bad news about the economy. The Labor Department reported that first-time unemployment claims last week fell by 37,000, to 391,000. The four-week rolling average also dropped. The Commerce Department raised its estimate of gross domestic product for the second quarter.
